Bruno Mars

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Gene Hernandez (born October 8, 1985), known by his stage name Bruno Mars, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, by a family of musicians, Mars began making music at a young age and performed in various musical venues in his hometown throughout his childhood. He graduated from high school and then moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a musical career. Mars produced songs for other artists, joining production team The Smeezingtons.

Danceable rhythms with an emphasis on synth, keyboards and drums. Pop vocals about love gains and love lost. A hint of Michael Jackson underneath his R&B stylings on his song ‘Treasure’.  ‘It will Rain’ written for ‘Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt.1′. A pleasant tune to listen to. Heavy on the ballad vocals. ‘If I Knew’ kinda rocks. A very talented young man.

Elena Jane “Ellie” Goulding (pronounced ‘goolding’) (born 30 December 1986) is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. In 2010, she became the second artist to both top the BBC’s annual Sound of… poll and win the Critics’ Choice Award at the Brit Awards in the same year, following Adele’s win of both in 2008. After signing to Polydor Records in 2009, she released her first EP in 2009, An Introduction to Ellie Goulding.

Ellie has a pixie like voice, heavy on the synth, keyboards and dance beat drums. Pop vocals round out the sound. Not really my cup of tea, but I think she can be very popular with young people in general. She has a promising career ahead of her if the current trend in popular music prevails.

Summertime

Written by Jeffrey Geiser. Posted in Holidays

Summer solstice

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The summer solstice occurs when the tilt of a planet’s semi-axis, in either the northern or the southern hemisphere, is most inclined toward the star (sun) that it orbits. Earth’s maximum axial tilt toward the sun is 23° 26′. This happens twice each year, at which times the sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the north or the south pole.

The summer solstice occurs during a hemisphere’s summer. This is northern solstice in the northern hemisphere and the southern solstice in the southern hemisphere. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs some time between December 20 and December 23 each year in the southern hemisphere and between June 20 and June 22 in the northern hemisphere in reference to UTC.

Though the summer solstice is an instant in time, the term is also colloquially used like midsummer to refer to the day on which it occurs. The summer solstice occurs on the day that has the longest period of daylight – except in the polar regions, where daylight is continuous, from a few days to six months around the summer solstice.

Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied among cultures, but most have recognition of sign of the fertility, involving holidays, festivals, and rituals around that time.

Solstice is derived from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).

Summer is usually mild in the Bay Area. It is the perfect weather to do anything you want. We have a few scorchers here and there. Those are the days we usually have to work. Some of us are lucky enough to just lounge around the house or head over the hill to Santa Cruz. Once there, you can swim in the chilly waters of the central California coast and experience the many cool carnival type rides on the Boardwalk.

The Boardwalk also offers free concerts throughout the summer. Many nostalgic bands perform there. If you do a google search of ‘santa cruz clubs’ you will see a map that designates the location of some really cool clubs like The Catalyst, Kuumbwa Jazz Center and others. You can also find a link to discover what  else is happening at

Around the time the sun starts to set it will start to cool down back in the valley. A sharp breeze sometimes blows through from the north, right off of the bay. Upon your return to the city, take a brief moment in time to enjoy the skyline from a unique vantage point as you descend the winding road through the Coast Ranges. Don’t stare to long, the road is often misjudged. There are surprises around every new corner. Never drive drunk or buzzed. Always designate a responsible driver. You will not regret it.
