What is Americana Music?
Americana to me is another hugely diverse genre, all centered on American roots. Americana, as defined by the Americana Music Association (AMA), is “American roots music based on the traditions of country. While the musical model can be traced back to the Elvis Presley marriage of ‘hillbilly music’ and R&B that birthed rock ‘n roll, Americana as a radio format developed during the 1990s as a reaction to the highly polished sound that defined the mainstream music of that decade.”
Americana blends folk, country, blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, jazz as well as other external influential styles, and by that I mean another uniquely American thing to do, take other cultures styles and blend them just enough with our own to be creatively different. It’s tough to say how mainstream a Americana artist or band really is, being a rebel at heart is completely American and so alot of truly incredible talent hardly see’s any recognition at all because the artists doesn’t care to! But in the Our City Radio Pledge of Allegiance, it say’s ” will bring visibility and exposure for all ” so even the most anti-mainstream, bandana wearin, flag wavin hippie that can play the hell outta of a banjo is gettin’ some airtime here! See how I even typed the way I was trying to talk? Whoa, i feel the Americana running through me now!!
