An Interview With Xavier Toscano
TripleD: Greetings friends and listeners of San Jose Our City Radio. It is my pleasure to introduce to you, direct from the dance floors of San Jose California, Xavier Toscano.
(Crowd applause and thumping dance music.
The crowd gets up and boogies for a moment.)
TripleD: ( motions for calmness ) Xavier, hello! Thank you for doing this interview with me. How are you feeling today?
Xavier: Been well, thanks! And thank you very much for taking the time. I really appreciate it.
TripleD: What first brought you to the dance-music scene?
Xavier: I’ve always loved dancing, since I was very little. Staring at the TV and trying to emulate dance moves from all of my favorite artists was commonplace at my house. Sometimes poorly, but I got enough attention from friends and family where I knew I loved it and wanted to do nothing else. So, dance music seemed like a natural fit for me.
TripleD: Where were you born and raised? Where is it that you now call home?
Xavier: I was born in Guadalajara, but have lived in San Jose since I was 5 years old. I’m Mexican-American, and very happy to have landed in San Jose. =)
TripleD: Do you have a stage name ?
Xavier: Hahahahah! Yeah, Xavier is my stage name. But, we’ll just leave my real name a mystery.
TripleD: Growing up, Xavier, what singers influenced you the most?
Xavier: Man, I have always been influenced by Top 40 music, and especially dance music. You can say that I love people, and feel good music. So, Top 40 had always been a great part of my influences. Which also means that all the usual suspects fall in the category of my favorite singers. MJ, Madonna, Gaga, Prince, Freddie Mercury… I could go on, and on, and on!
TripleD: How long have you been in the Dance Music business? How did you get started?
Xavier: I jumped in head first! I recorded my first album in 2008, started performing just about anywhere I could get my happy little feet into, and here I am today.
TripleD: Do you have a favorite among these performers? Madonna, Lady Gaga or Katy Perry? Britney or Christina? Cyndi Lauper, or Kelly Clarkson? Rihanna or Nicki Minaj?
Xavier: ALL OF THEM! At one point or another I have found myself really enjoying their music.
TripleD: Do you have a favorite male performer or band?
Xavier: YUP! Tons! However, I think my all time favorite vocalist is Freddie Mercury. He was such a badass!
TripleD: Have you had a good deal of success with your music? Could you tell us more about recording those and are you doing videos?
Xavier: I have had some really amazing things happen. For instance, last year I performed in Washington DC (special thanks to my promoter Barbara Sobel), and in London. This year I went to Hawaii for the first time. So I’ve met some amazing people and have been to places I would not have been to otherwise. I’m also on Pandora and iHeart Radio now, so it has all been a really cool experience.
Recording is a great experience. The creative experience is exciting. You’re giving birth to something that did not exist before, and you’re about to set it free out into the world. It’s also a little nerve-racking to think that maybe people will not like “my baby”.
However, it all comes full circle when you get nice messages from fans, or when you get nice feedback. Yes, I do record videos. Check out my youtube channel:
TripleD: Tell me a little about your creative process. How do you find inspiration?
Xavier: For me, since I am can’t make music, I work with composers who can. Most of the time, I receive music that I write to, and I’m inspired by many, many things! I have no clue where inspiration will come from. I suppose being alive is inspiration enough. The entire world provides an infinite amount of inspiration.
TripleD: Miley Cyrus, the VMA Awards. Did you see it. What are your thoughts?
Xavier: LOL! I was like “WOW”! On the one hand, she looked like she was having a great time and it was definitely entertainment. On the other hand, I’m not sure it should have gone down like that. In the end, it’s show biz, and you can say that the she did the best with what she has… I wasn’t so much morally concerned for her as I was cringing over her “talent”. But who am I to hold her good fortune against her. I am sure she has also worked very hard.
TripleD: Where would you like to see your career go in the next five years?
Xavier: I want to open for a major artist soon! That is my biggest goal. However, I really would like to sign a record deal and tour the world. I want a ton of stamps on my passport! That would be amazing!
TripleD: How would you describe your stage persona image as opposed to the real-life, day-to-day Xavier?
Xavier: Day to day Xavier is very similar to his stage persona, in fact I would say that I am a hard worker – period! Most people would categorize me as a “nice” guy too. However, on stage, I try to be nothin’ nice! What I mean by that, has more to do with how excited I get on stage and I give my all. I just let go. Nothing feels better to me than being on stage and pouring my soul out.
